The Irvine Police Department released the identities of a man and his girlfriend that were arrested after IPD used SWAT to retrieve the couple after an eight-hour stand-off on April 29.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, April 29, IPD identified 28-year-old Daniel Ramirez and his girlfriend, Mallory Arredondo, 27, who was also arrested.

Ramirez was charged with kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. IPD reported that Ramirez pistol-whipped the victim after stealing the victim’s car.

According to IPD, the situation began on the morning of Wednesday, April 28, when Ramirez and his girlfriend asked to borrow a vehicle from an acquaintance they met just days prior.

When the acquaintance, who would soon become the victim, declined Ramirez’s request, Ramirez took the vehicle without permission.

The victim then called IPD to report the car stolen.

IPD located the vehicle, but after the victim reported that Ramirez was armed, officers did not pursue Ramirez.

IPD also asked the public to avoid the area near Irvine Center Drive and Spectrum, “due to police activity.”

However, upon return to the victim’s apartment in Irvine, IPD officers discovered the car Ramirez had taken, which was still running in the parking garage.

When the victim reported that Ramirez had returned, the victim says he was pistol-whipped and held against his will inside his apartment.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, IPD called in SWAT to control the situation.

IPD reported that Ramirez “peacefully” exited the residence at 8:43 p.m.

After his arrest, IPD issued a statement, adding that three firearms were recovered, including a non-serialized A.R. 15 rifle.

“All the firearms were in various stages of disassembly. Detectives believe Ramirez dissembled the weapons when officers were negotiating his surrender. Ammunition for one of the handguns was also recovered,” per IPD’s statement. “Ramirez was arrested and booked at Orange County jail for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and outstanding warrants. Detectives will request firearm charges be added by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office at a later date against Ramirez, if appropriate.”
