On Thursday, Oct. 21 Woodbridge High School was placed on a brief lockdown, after the Irvine Police Department investigated an off-campus incident that resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to a student.
Initial reports indicated that a student may have been stabbed, but the Irvine Police Department is still investigating the legitimacy of those claims.
Karie Davies, Public Information Officer with the Irvine Police Department, confirmed that an altercation occurred off-campus between male students, although it is unclear how many were involved.
Davies added that a knife was recovered, but she added that it is unclear from where.
“An altercation occurred off campus (for unknown reasons) involving male students who attend Woodbridge HS. A male juvenile received a small laceration to his back and ran to the school and received medical aid from the nurse. He has since been transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury,” Davies wrote in an email to Irvine Weekly. “A knife was recovered (I’m unclear where it was recovered) and a male juvenile is in custody. If there are other suspects or victims, that information will be determined during our investigation.”
Earlier Thursday afternoon, Councilmember Anthony Kuo posted an update, adding that the high school had lifted all lockdowns and gone back to normal operations after students had been ordered to shelter in place, as the Orange County Fire Authority and the Irvine Police Department investigated an off-campus fight.
“Following the fight, one student returned to campus and reported they sustained a laceration. All of the involved parties have been detained. The campus community briefly sheltered in place but has since resumed normal operation. The injured student is being transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the altercation and the weapon involved remains under investigation by our Patrol Officers and our Youth Services Team. IPD remains in close communication with IUSD.”
