City of Hope has announced plans to accelerate development of its Orange County campus with an investment of more than $1 billion. A world-renowned treatment and research center, City of Hope plans to bring highly specialized cancer care directly to O.C.. The cancer center is now expecting to open its doors in 2021 at FivePoint Gateway in Irvine.  The project was previously slated for completion in 2025.

“This is a time of great promise and innovation in cancer research and care, and we are bringing that excitement and expertise to Orange County,” said Robert Stone, president and CEO of City of Hope in a press release. “City of Hope is dramatically expanding to provide a cancer network of unparalleled scale for this community. It will be a nexus of service, science and care. It is made possible by our partnership with FivePoint Holdings and a strong community of philanthropic supporters in Orange County and beyond, who stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our determination to eradicate cancer.”

In addition to specialized care, this state-of-the-art campus will offer phase I-III clinical trials, precision medicine and early cancer detection. In bringing these services to Irvine, City of Hope is striving to eliminate the difficulties of medical commuting for residents of the nation’s sixth most populous county.  Currently, nearly 20 percent of residents must leave the area for advanced cancer care. 

“We’ve spent the last year listening intently to the people in Orange County, evaluating the way cancer care is delivered and identifying the gaps,” explains Annette M. Walker, president of City of Hope Orange County. “It became evident that we needed to bring our highly specialized treatments as soon as possible. We’re delivering on our promise and opening our doors faster to alleviate the unnecessary hardships on patients and their families. Residents soon will be able to access City of Hope’s latest and most advanced therapies closer to home.”

With its investment, City of Hope, in collaboration with partner developer FivePoint Holdings, LLC, has purchased 11 acres of Irvine land in which to build its new comprehensive cancer campus. An extension of the established City of Hope in Duarte, the campus will also be home to an outpatient center, a clinical research center, and personalized supportive care services. In addition to the campus, City of Hope Orange County will also include clinical locations offering medical oncology and infusion services. There are plans to expand to a Newport Beach location later this year. 

City of Hope is an independent biomedical research and treatment center that conducts more than 500 clinical trials and is one of only 49 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. Upon its completion, the City of Hope Orange County campus hospital will be the county’s only specialty hospital dedicated solely to treating and curing cancer.
