Author John Cerasani gives Tips on What (not) to do when Starting a Company

Author, John Cerasani waited 12 years to write his second book. Why?

“I didn’t think that enough changed in my life to offer more than what was in Paid Training.  It just felt like it would be a repeat of the same thing.  Sure, I wanted to emphasize certain points more, but I didn’t think there was enough new meat on the bones to pull off a second book with my audience,” John humbly admits.

I suppose that selling a company for tens of millions of dollars and consistently winning against some of the biggest corporations in America was enough new “meat” for Cerasani to take another stab at being an Author.

Cerasani has some pretty sound advice for new business owners:

  • Inflate your company, not your head
  • Don’t name the company after yourself
  • Speak the language, but drop the buzz words
  • Bigger isn’t Better
  • Every Dollar you spend on an employee is a dollar you take from the company. Make sure they are worth it.

John shares that these principles helped him grow his insurance company in Chicago to a force in the niche of servicing private higher education institutions.

“What it came down to was what was best for the client.   Any internal decision ever made, ultimately was driven by asking the question of: was this better or worse for our customers and will it help us grow?” John shares.

An example of this comes straight from his 2011 book “Paid Training” in chapter 30:

“In the business world, a lot of buzzwords or cliches make their rounds.  People will use such words to sound smart or sound like they know what they are talking about, but what are they really saying?

Nothing.

Case in point:

I know in the environment we work in, it’s important that we put the fires out proactively and adapt to the ever-changing issues presented in this arena.  It can appear to be quite a daunting task at times.  But you should rest assured that team of professionals is prepared for the actionable items necessary to deliver the desired results for our clients.”

Cerasani is releasing his follow: 2000 Percent Raise.    It is available for pre-order through 2000PercentRaise.com.
