The annual AFI Film Festival usually captures an array of films from around the world and plays them in some of L.A.’s most iconic venues, and while they had to adjust for the current pandemic, fans have been able to enjoy the festivities on a virtual level.

With the festival coming to a grand close Thursday, October 22, there will still be two live events for viewers to enjoy from the comfort of their home. The first will stream at 5 p.m. and will be a tribute to Sofia Coppola. Followed by an 8 p.m. live screening of Errol Morris’s “My Psychedelic Love Story.”

While the feel might not have been the same as sitting in Grauman’s Chinese Theater, or Hollywood Roosevelt, the Audi-sponsored festival did give the opportunity to go out and be among others with a drive-in screening of Regina King’s “One Night In Miami,” that was hosted at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

The festival also held its tradition of honoring filmmakers with tributes to Emmy Award-winning director Kirby Dick, Caméra d’Or winner Mira Nair, Grand Slam “EGOT” winner Rita Moreno and Academy Award winning director Sofia Coppola.

A plethora of summits brought to light topical discussions from elevating BIPOC filmmakers, to “Centering characters with mental health conditions in film…” that can still be viewed through Eventive.

Tickets for the Grand Closing can be purchased on fest.afi.com,as film buffs can still go back into the catalog of screenings and summits, and sign up to watch the previously released films.
