The city of Irvine will celebrate the work of David Kawashima, a talented and well-known photographer, husband and stepfather, who spent nearly two decades documenting notable milestones in Irvine and Southern California. Kawashima passed away in April, 2021.
To honor the scope of Kawashima’s career as a photojournalist documenting happenings large and small in Irvine, City Hall will be hosting the art exhibition, David Kawashima: Capturing Community. The exhibition will open Thursday, Sept. 16 – Friday, Sept. 24.

Kawashima’s work behind the lens resonated outside of Irvine, as the photographer had his work published with the Los Angeles Times, ESPN and the Irvine World News.
Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan said the city is proud to honor the important work Kawashima accomplished for the city of Irvine.
“Over the years, David documented countless milestones, celebrations, meetings, events, presentations, ensuring these moments in Irvine’s history could be permanently preserved,” said Khan. “We are extremely grateful to have had the privilege of knowing and working with David, and we offer our sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him.”
To further recognize Kawashima’s life, the City Council has also added his name to the Wall of Recognition at Col. Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park, and renamed a photography studio at Irvine Fine Arts Center in his honor.
