Class of 2020 graduates at the University of California, Irvine School Of Biological Sciences received a surprise (virtual) visit from one of the world’s most famous scientists during their commencement ceremony.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious diseases, who casually referred to himself as “Tony” as he congratulated the class of 2020.

Fauci, who has become a public figure in the face of COVID-19 said he was “profoundly aware” of the far-from-ideal circumstances in which the graduates must endure the highs, lows and uncertainty of graduating college during “an unprecedented global pandemic.” But rather than focus on the negative, he said it was time to adapt.

“I am profoundly aware that celebrating your graduation virtually, without the in-person support of your professors, fellow students and friends, is extremely disappointing at best,” the nation’s leading health expert said softly. “However, we must adapt to this extraordinary situation as you have done so well, and unite at overcoming this COVID-19 challenge. Please hang in there — we need your talent, your energy, your resolve and your character to get through this difficult time.”

In his short speech, which is now posted to YouTube, Fauci reassured graduates that while the future may be filled with uncertainly, graduates should be confident to enter the next chapter of their careers, using the lessons from their experiences at UC Irvine’s School of Biological Sciences.

“Your school’s mission, of transforming human health through life science, has imbued you with valuable training to become leaders in the biomedical response to this and the many biomedical challenges to come.”
