Irvine has been named the safest city of its size for the 14th year in a row.
Data garnered from the Federal Bureau of Investigations shows that, as of 2018, Irvine has had a remarkably low rate of violent crime per capita when compared to other cities.
The recognition extends to Part I-classified violence, which includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft and arson. Of all American cities with a population density of 250,000 or more, Irvine has time and again proven to be the safest with the lowest percentage of any of these crimes.
Irvine Mayor Christina Shea applauded the efforts of the Irvine Police Department, crediting their hard work as the reason for the community’s continued security.
“Our City Council, residents, businesses and visitors continue to owe a debt of gratitude to them for their commitment to duty. Through strong partnerships with our community, IPD continually strives to deliver exceptional service, keeping Irvine the safest city to live, work and play [in],” expressed Mayor Shea.
Community involvement and a cooperative relationship with city leadership allows the IPD to maintain public safety as a top priority.
“Irvine continues to be a safe community due to the collaboration between the men and women of the Irvine Police Department who work tirelessly every day to identify and respond to criminal activity and quality of life issues, our city leaders who always make public safety a top priority, and our residents who actively participate in crime prevention and community improvement strategies,” explains Irvine Police Chief Mike Hamel.
Chief Hamel plans to sustain Irvine’s tradition of safety by encouraging these efforts and pursuing a lasting partnership with the police, public and city leadership.
“These efforts have been critically important to preserving the quality of life we have all come to appreciate,” said Chief Hamel.
In order to effectively preserve public safety, the IPD separates Irvine into three regions: Portola, University and Crossroads. Each region is overseen by a dedicated Area Commander who is supported by a team of supervisors, patrol officers, traffic officers, investigators and civilian support staff. The IPD credits this geographic systems as allowing them to maintain a beneficial familiarity with those who work and live in each area.
The department hopes that their efforts solidify Irvine’s status as the safest city for a 15th year.
“The men and women of the Irvine Police Department are consummate professionals who work hard every day to keep our wonderful community safe,” said Mayor Shea.
