The Irvine Police Department has announced the arrest of a 20-year-old Irvine man for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs, after a fatal car accident killed two people and a dog on Sunday, July 17.

The suspect was taken into custody after his alleged involvement in a fatal collision near Spring Valley and Meadow Valley.

The collision, involving two cars, according to Irvine Police Department, caused a fire and may have lead to the death of the driver, passenger, and a dog inside a Mini Cooper.

The suspect, identified by IPD as Jack Varganagl, was driving a Volkswagen Golf and was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

According to reports, the Mini Cooper caught fire, and its occupants were unable to escape. The Orange County Fire Authority assisted in extinguishing the fire, however the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

“The cause of the collision remains under investigation but speed and driving under the influence of drugs appear to be factors,” IPD wrote in a statement.

The deceased have yet to be publicly identified as the Orange County Coroner works to notified the next-of-kin.
