The Irvine Police Department is investigating a suspected murder-suicide that allegedly took place on the UC Irvine campus.

The bodies of a male and female were originally discovered on campus by the UC Irvine Police Department on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at approximately 3:52 p.m. UC Irvine police said the department received 9-1-1 calls regarding bodies on the ground outside of the Social Science B Plaza. UC Irvine police contacted IPD to assist with the investigation.

Although it has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement, it appears the victims fell to their deaths. Reports indicated that the victims were on the roof of the Social Science B Plaza.

In a statement to the UC Irvine community, Chancellor Howard Gilman said the early investigation does point to a murder-suicide.

“Preliminary information does suggest the possibility that at least one death occurred at the hands of another. Under such circumstances, the City of Irvine Police will be leading the investigation and will be responsible for updating our community on its progress. Of course, the university will be fully cooperating with these efforts.”

During the preliminary investigation of the scene, IPD reported that the victims could be related to one another.

“Detectives discovered evidence suggesting this incident is a murder-suicide. Preliminary investigation determined the decedents may be related. The names of the involved parties are not being released pending notification of next of kin,” according to a statement from IPD.

Gillman said that the university is hoping to identify the victims quickly, adding that the incident is not a threat to the community.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death on campus of two individuals this afternoon,” Gillman said in a statement. “We are still gathering information about who the victims are and exactly what happened, but law enforcement has informed us that there is no ongoing danger to our community.”

It is unknown at this time if the deceased have any ties to UC Irvine.
