On Wednesday, July 21, the Orange County Sheriff announced that its Hazardous Device Section would perform an emergency disposal of 20 pounds of explosive material collected during the Fourth of July weekend, starting at approximately 10:00 a.m.

Several O.C. law enforcement agencies will be on hand at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine on Wednesday. Local law enforcement agencies are asking the public not to be alarmed by the sound of explosions.

In a statement via Twitter, the O.C Sheriff estimated that the controlled detonation of illegal fireworks in Irvine will take approximately one hour and that both the Irvine Police Department and the Orange County Fire Authority would be on-site during the detonation.

“The OC Sheriff Bomb Squad will conduct an emergency disposal of 20 pounds of explosive materials that were collected during the Fourth of July holiday. You may hear loud explosive noises during the disposal process near the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. OC Waste & Recycling, the Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange County Health Care Agency will be on site to monitor and ensure the proper disposal and safety of the operation.”

Per information released by the Orange County Sheriff, the detonations will be conducted in the ground, via shot holes, which are holes dug into the ground.

In Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Police Department “miscalculated” the weight of an illegal fireworks detonation, which injured more than a dozen people in South Los Angeles earlier this month.
