In an effort to prepare residents for the potential of loud noises or unexpected booms on Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced a controlled explosive disposal at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine.

The OCSD Hazardous Devices Section plans to detonate more than 250 pounds of explosive materials in a remote area of the landfill, according to a press release posted on the Irvine Police Department’s Facebook post on Monday.

“Residents may hear loud explosive noises from approximately 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, during the operation. The Orange County Fire Authority, Orange County Health Care Agency, and OC Sheriff tactical medics will be on site to ensure the health and safety of all involved,” stated the press release.

With the prior notification of the planned detonation, IPD hopes to prevent the department’s 9-1-1 center from being overwhelmed with calls regarding the potential noise.

In response to comments on the post, the IPD noted that the disposal of materials would occur in a remote location, away from residential areas, and is not expected to impact the community.
