Video released by the Irvine Police Department shows Irvine Police officers administering the overdose reversal drug Narcan to a puppy that was reportedly exposed to the narcotic fentanyl.

 

In the now viral video, posted to Instagram, body cam video clearly shows a puppy breathing heavily,  

As an Irvine police officer uses a plastic syringe-type device to give the animal the treatment. The post indicated that the puppy was with its owners at a Walmart on Von Karman. 

The owners were arrested for narcotics possession, and the animal was taken to an emergency veterinarian. 

“Yesterday, two people were arrested at Walmart for narcotics possession. Their puppy inside the car was exposed to fentanyl and began to show signs of an overdose. Officers gave the dog a dose of Narcan, and she immediately began to recover. An IPD officer quickly transported the dog to an emergency veterinarian for treatment,” the post read. 

Irvine identified the suspects as Caleb Aaron Gibson, 29, of San Juan Capistrano, and Katherine Marylou Menke, 27, of Santa Ana. 

The post also reported that the department will also pursue additional charges against the dog’s owners. 

“We have asked the DA to charge the pair with felony animal cruelty and possession of narcotics. We thank the officers for their swift actions.”

In terms of additional charges, Irvine Weekly reached out to the Orange County District Attorney for a report of the charges filed. 

In an email, Kimberly Edds, Public Information Officer with the Orange County District Attorney, said the agencies were still working to determine what charges will be filed. 

“We are working with the Irvine Police Department to gather all of the necessary information to determine what charges will be filed. We will be putting out a statement about the case when we do,” Edds wrote.
