After the community condemned the now-viral clip of racially-charged comments made toward Portola High School senior Makai Brown during a men’s basketball game against Laguna Hills High School, the local basketball community continues to show their support for Brown and his future.
The community and local basketball coaches came together in support of the Brown family, presenting Makai with a sports agency internship, and created a college scholarship fund – accompanied by a $20,000 donation.
Chris Childress, Capistrano Christian Valley High School’s Head Basketball Coach, shared the news on Instagram, after Brown’s senior game night, on Saturday, Jan. 29.
“A lot of you guys are familiar with the racial incident that happened in OC at the basketball game last week. We rallied the troops to come together and support @makaibrownn for his senior night game. He played well and felt the support all night [long],” Childress wrote in the caption. “It’s always BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL for us……”
While Childress was joined by other local coaches and supporters, he also thanked the players from his own team, Capistrano Valley Christian, for coming to support Brown and the Portola High School basketball program.
The incident gained national attention last month after Brian Hosokawa, president of the Portola Girls Basketball association, posted the clip to YouTube.
Shortly after the clip was posted, Irvine Council Member Anthony Kuo shared it during the Irvine City Council meeting and demanded people stand up against this type of behavior.
