A Woodbridge High School student was allegedly in possession of a knife with a four-inch blade during an off-campus altercation on Thursday, Oct. 21. Irvine Police later recovered a knife blade that had been separated from its handle inside a trash can on the Woodbridge High School campus.

Karie Davies, the Irvine Police Department Public Information Officer, said the victim of the altercation claims the blade fell out of his sweatshirt after the altercation, and he threw it away. Davies added that due to a pending investigation, the department will not be releasing a photo of the knife.

“According to the victim, it fell out of his sweatshirt and he put it in the trash can. The knife had been separated from the handle. It is unclear where the handle was found but it was recovered. The blade itself was about 4 inches. The blade recovered was the blade used,” Davies wrote in an email to Irvine Weekly. “Presumably, the knife blade got stuck in his clothing after the altercation and eventually fell from his sweatshirt. That’s just an assumption since we weren’t there.”

On Thursday, Davies told Irvine Weekly that a Woodbridge High School student had sustained “a small laceration” to his back and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges been have filed at the time of this report.
