Suburban Ecologies, a new art exhibition being featured at the Great Park Gallery in the Palm Court Arts Complex in Irvine, is the product of artist and UC Irvine professor Jesse Colin Jackson.
While gallery shows are currently not allowed under California’s regional stay-at-home order, OC Parks has created a virtual walkthrough to showcase the visual aesthetics of Jackson’s latest exhibit on YouTube.
Within Suburban Ecologies, Jackson, a professor of electronic art and design at UCI, where he also serves as Associate Dean of Research and Innovation, incorporated elements of photography, digital multimedia and sculpture to pay homage to the historical and ecologically diverse areas of Orange County.
In an Instagram post, the city of Irvine shared a piece from Jackson’s latest gallery, with a link to view the new walkthrough video.
“While City galleries remain closed, the Great Park Arts staff has created an online video walkthrough of the current exhibition. Suburban Ecologies showcases large-scale panoramic photography, video, and sculpture by artist Jesse Colin Jackson. A Canadian artist now based in Southern California, Jackson’s work has been the subject of several national and international exhibitions,” a portion of the post read.
While the Orange County coastline seems to inspire a repetitive visual theme for Suburban Ecologies, Jackson also included scenes from the neighborhoods within city of Irvine in his artistic presentations.
In fact, one of the largest pieces of artwork within Suburban Ecologies is a six-and-a-half-foot-wide, two-foot-tall floor-assembled sculpture titled, “A Village of Irvine,” constructed with CNC milled concrete, steel hardware, 3-D printed PLA plastic and neodymium magnets.
In addition to Jackson’s sculptural homage to the city of Irvine, Suburban Ecologies also features a series of half-a-dozen 36-inch by 54-inch framed inkjet prints titled, “The Village of Irvine:” featuring prints from Turtle Rock, University Park, Woodbridge, Stone Gate and the Northwood neighborhoods.
Originally from Canada, the UCI professor’s latest exhibit in Irvine is a reflection of the artist’s ongoing research after moving to California in 2013 and was scheduled to run between Sunday, Dec. 6 and Sunday Feb. 14, 2021.
A description from the Orange County Great Parks Exhibition page details behind Suburban Ecologies.
“Orange County’s suburban sprawls are an undeniable characteristic of the region. From historic architecture to planned developments, rolling hills to diverse expansive coastlines, these characteristics have been the subject of artist Jesse Colin Jackson’s work since relocating to Orange County in 2013. The Great Park Gallery in the Palm Court Arts Complex presents Suburban Ecologies, an exhibition showcasing large-scale panoramic photography, video, and sculpture which are the results of Jackson’s ongoing research.”
