While the City of Irvine has been nationally recognized as the Safest City In America, on Thursday, August 12, Irvine was also listed as the fastest growing city in California, among cities with a population of 50,000 or more, according to the 2020 U.S. Census data. 

The data, as a part of the U.S. Census’ highly anticipated report, indicates that between 2010 – 2020 no other city in the state has grown faster than Irvine. With that recognition, Irvine still did not appear on the list of the nation’s largest cities. California cities included in that list must have increased in population by more than 100,000 people within the last decade to be listed. 

In terms of the largest cities in America, Los Angeles’ population grew by more than 100,000 people in just ten years, bringing its current population total to 3.9 million as of 2020. Joining Los Angeles in terms of size, Census lists New York, Chicago, Phoenix, San Jose, Philadelphia, Houston, San Diego and Dallas as the largest cities in the nation. 

As for growth, Phoenix, Arizona grew by more than 11% within the last two decades. Starting with 1.3 million people in 2000 and jumping to 1.6 million in 2020. Houston, Texas posted the second highest percentage change in population over the decade with 9.8 million citizens total.

Earlier this year Irvine was ranked No. 1 in the nation for financial strength according to the nonprofit Truth In Accounting.
