After two consecutive years of hosting its State of the City address virtually, the city of Irvine is preparing for the 2022 State of the City event to be in person at the Barclay Theater on Wednesday, March 9.

The March 9 event will be the first in-person State of the city address since 2019.

While there has not been an opportunity to host a State of the City in person, from Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan’s perspective, the city has continued to accomplish its goals, despite a looming pandemic.

Khan spoke to Irvine Weekly via text message on Friday, Feb. 25, to share some of the topics she will be discussing during the 2022 State of the City.

While she did not reveal specifics, Khan said to expect some reflection on some of the city’s most recognizable achievements, which involve the city’s move to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, as well as recognize Irvine’s long-standing reputation as one of the most fiscally sound city’s in the nation.

In October, the city of Irvine was awarded $1 million for meeting the requirements to participate in the Cool City Challenge.

Just recently, in February, Irvine became the largest city in Orange County to commit to 100% renewable energy through the Orange County Power Authority.

“This year the SOC is special because we’re at a bigger venue with activities for the entire family and networking opportunities for business leaders,” Khan wrote. “I’ll be talking about housing, economics, environment and more from what we have accomplished in the past year to what’s ahead.”

Irvine’s 2022 State of the City address will begin on Wednesday, March 9, at 5:00 p.m. Khan is expected to give an address at approximately 6:00 p.m.
