If you are suffering from arthritis pain, you might be thinking about using cannabidiol CBD as a treatment option. Chances are that you have already tried CBD to get relief from chronic pain. As per the results of a poll conducted by the Arthritis Foundation, 29% of the patients currently use CBD and most of them reported improved sleep and physical functions.
If you are suffering from arthritis, you might also be tempted to try CBD for arthritis pain. But is there any evidence that it works to reduce pain? Let us see.
Is CBD Effective For Arthritis Pain?
There are many animal and laboratory studies proving the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, however, there are no human studies to back these claims. One of the largest reviews conducted on cannabis and CBD concluded that cannabis is an effective treatment for chronic pain. There are also anecdotal evidence and testimonials of users who have tried using CBD in different forms to treat pain. But we will need to wait to have scientifically valid clinical trials to strongly claim that CBD can be effectively used to treat arthritis pain and other chronic pains.
Are There Any Side Effects Of Using CBD For Arthritis?
CBD is generally considered a safe substance. However, in higher doses, it might cause drowsiness, lightheadedness, and dryness of the mouth. In some of the rare cases, it might also lead to liver issues, due to interactions between other medications. Moreover, there can be uncertainties about the purity of the CBD products available in the market due to the absence of regulations. There are concerns raised about inhaled cannabis for pregnant women as it can lead to low birth weight of the baby. It is not yet found if this applies to the use of CBD.
Some of the specialists also share concerns that regular use of CBD for arthritis might upset the natural pain regulation system of the body which might lead to tolerance. When you are tolerant of a product, you will need higher doses of the product to have the same effect. However, the potential for addiction is considered very low in the case of CBD products. One definite downside of CBD products is the cost. CBD products are not cheap and depending on the quality, frequency of use, and dosage, the cost can be considerable.
These are some of the important things that you need to understand before using CBD products to treat arthritis pain.
