We’ll be honest: most of today’s pet-approved CBD oils have a “dog bias.” Considering about 38 percent of US households own dogs, it’s no surprise most of the research and marketing for pet CBD products goes towards canines. However, 25 percent of Americans own at least one cat. Understandably, many cat lovers have become curious whether pet-approved CBD oils will work fine on felines.
While the research into CBD for cats is limited, here are a few findings cat owners should keep in mind.
Does CBD Oil Work For Cats?
As mentioned above, there aren’t any scientific studies examining CBD’s use on cats. However, most scientists agree that cats and dogs have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). So, CBD should have a similar impact on pets as it does on humans.
Also, most veterinarians claim high-quality & lab-verified CBD oil is generally safe to feed healthy cats. However, if cats have pre-existing medical conditions that require medications, CBD may have an adverse reaction. It’s also possible for cats to have allergic reactions to CBD, especially at high doses.
While we don’t know how CBD works for cats, a few studies suggest CBD has anti-inflammatory effects on both dogs and rats. Clinical trials also found that CBD works better for anxiety than placebo pills. If CBD has a similar impact on cats, it could have anti-stress and anti-pain properties. Unfortunately, we can’t verify these claims until we have a few well-controlled studies examining CBD for cats.
How Do You Dose CBD Oil For Cats?
If you are going to experiment with CBD for your cat, you must start with a tiny dose. Generally, it’s safe to feed your cat 2 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight.
Since most adult cat breeds weigh around 10 pounds, you’ll probably start with a 2 mg CBD dose. Please monitor your cat’s behavior to ensure they’re not having a bad reaction. If you’re not noticing any of CBD’s benefits, you could increase the dosage by 2 mg per day until you see an improvement.
Just be wary of feeding your cat too much CBD oil. Although CBD is non-psychoactive, it could trigger side effects like fatigue, nausea, or digestive issues. If you notice these bad reactions, please stop using CBD for a few days and only start feeding it again at lower amounts.
Also, you should only use pet-approved CBD oils for cats. Human-grade CBD oils may contain chemicals that are OK for us, but not so great for pets. You should always get a third-party lab test result with your CBD oil to verify it has legal THC levels and zero traces of pesticides and heavy metals.
Please Speak With A Vet Before Feeding CBD To Your Pet!
Since CBD for cats is such a new topic, we don’t recommend experimenting with pet-approved CBD oil unless you have a vet’s approval. Although we take great care to get rid of THC in our lab-tested products, CBD may not be suitable for your cat’s situation. You should never start using CBD oil unless you get the all-clear from a professional vet, especially if your cat is already taking prescriptions.
