The city of Irvine has announced an official time and date for a swearing-in ceremony for its new mayor, Farrah Khan, a pair of new City Council members, and returning incumbent Mike Carroll.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Nov. 29, the City of Irvine announced plans to host a drive-in style swearing-in ceremony at the Orange County Great Park.

The Swearing-In Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 1:00 p.m. While the public is encouraged to attend, the post included information that would allow residents to view the event remotely.

“The community is invited to attend a Drive-In Swearing-in Ceremony at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, at the Orange County Great Park for the City’s newly elected Mayor and City Councilmembers.

Councilmember Farrah N. Khan will be sworn in as Mayor, while Councilmember Mike Carroll, Councilmember-elect Tammy Kim, and Councilmember-elect Larry Agran will be sworn into office for their respective terms.

Due to COVID-19 safety guidelines, attendance for the drive-in ceremony is limited, and guests must register in advance.

It will also be available to view live on the City’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. After the event, it will be available to watch on the City’s website and on ICTV on Cox Communications Channel 30 or on AT&T U-verse Channel 99.

On Nov. 25, Neal Kelley, the Orange County Registrar of Voters, certified all ballots in Orange County.

After a packed City Council race in Irvine, the certification of ballots means candidates can officially declare victory.

In the City Council race, with 14 total candidates, Tammy Kim jumped out to an early lead, trailed by candidates Larry Agran, Lauren Johnson-Norris and Incumbent Mike Carroll.

The race between Johnson-Norris and Carroll remained close through the first weekend post election. At one point, the difference between the three candidates vying for second place was less than 1,000 votes.

Ultimately, Carroll surpassed both Agran and Johnson-Norris, finishing with 38,615 votes (13.07%).

Irvine will also have a new mayor, as Farrah Khan will be publicly sworn into office on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Khan, who ran against incumbent Mayor Christian Shea, took an early lead on election night, and was able to maintain a double-digital lead into the following morning.

As of Dec. 1, Khan finished with 56,304 votes (47.56%).
