CBD or cannabidiol is becoming popular as a miracle cure for many medical conditions. CBD infused oils and other products are gaining traction in the field of skincare and cosmetics as well. Most ardent CBD fans often get confused about the origin of CBD in the products they use. Many users don’t have clarity on whether the CBD infused in their products originates from natural hemp or cannabis.

Difference Between Hemp And Cannabis

Both hemp and cannabis are derived from different varieties of the plant Cannabis Sativa. Both contain CBD and THC in varying amounts, with around 540 other substances. The name, makeup and classification of the plant is the primary reason for the confusion about the source of CBD. The CBD content in hemp plants is higher than that of cannabis plants. The concentration of CBD in cannabis is much lower than THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is a major component in the cannabis plant.

In the U.S., Cannabis Sativa plants that contain less than 0.3 percent THC are categorized as industrial hemp. This particular variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant can be grown legally across most states in the country, subject to some strict regulations. Leaves and flowers of the plant are usually used to make most CBD products.

Varieties of the Cannabis Sativa plants that contain more THC and less CBD are categorized as cannabis. The varieties such as C.indica, C.ruderalis and C.sativa and hybrid plants formed by a mix of these three varieties are examples of the above-mentioned category. Also notable is the fact that the potency of these cannabis varieties is steadily on the rise. This means the presence of more THC – the euphoria-inducing component – in these varieties, with each passing year.

Hemp CBD Or Cannabis CBD?

Now that we know hemp contains more CBD and less THC, while cannabis contains less CBD and more THC; let us take a look at what makes CBD derived from these two different.

The chemical makeup of the component CBD does not change whether it is derived from hemp or cannabis. As a result, the benefits, as well as common side effects of CBD, remain the same, irrespective of which plant it originates from. The amount of CBD that can be derived from each plant differs. More CBD can be extracted legally from hemp whereas CBD content in cannabis is low and the product is illegal in many states. This makes hemp a better and legal option for most CBD manufacturers.

The major difference between hemp CBD and cannabis CBD remains the legality of extraction and manufacture of CBD, making the former the best option in the given scenario.
